Is WWE PG REALLY a bad thing?

The Raven's Epitaph

Getting Noticed By Management
Just lately I've been seeing alot of hate towards the current PG rating in WWE, both on WrestleZone forums and Youtube. So here's what I have to say about it.

I really don't think it's that much of a problem. I like WWE at the moment, they have some really good superstars active at the moment, young talent moving in through WWE's development company, FCW and NXT. They have really good storylines going at the moment and quite honestly, I look forward to watching WWE all week long up until the next week. Now, I started watching WWE back in 1999 and I sat down and watched Smackdown, even now in mid 2010 I still watch Smackdown (and RAW too!) and I haven't yet become bored of watching it.

Through the years we've seen great superstars such as Triple H, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Kane, The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin; but the amount of people moaning that they want those superstars back is just ridiculous. Shawn Michaels, The Rock and Stone Cold have retired so there isn't a whole lot we can do about that, Kane is absolutely fine where he is right now, he's the World Champion for godsake and we don't need him to wear a mask or smack somebody over the head with a chair repeatedly for that to work. The Undertaker is also fine where he is in the PG era, he's still as good to watch as he was back in the older era's.

Yeah, maybe the PG rating has spoiled Wrestling for a few people, but you still watch it don't you? Honestly, either have a valid reason for not liking WWE or just stop moaning about stuff you KNOW isn't going to happen and be happy with what we have now. I really enjoy WWE at the moment, great storylines and superstars, I really don't think PG is such a bad thing at all.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks everybody.

Really another thread about the PG rating. I honestly dont even care what the rating is. It could be rated G as long as they put on good matches and story lines. Cussing adds very little to the over all product. Bleeding was overused to the point it was clearly fake(even tho we already knew it was. it was just even more obvious).

So no PG is not a bad thing. And look before you actually make a thread theres at leat 2 or 3 threads about this already

Okay, this is the last time I'm going to explain...

WWE is a cycle. It starts out by entertaining the kids and as the kids grow more mature, so does WWE. Done. :D

BTW, Youtube IWC? Yeah, they don't know shit. They're the ones saying "CENAA SHUCKSS!!11!!" or "ATTITUD33 ERAA FTW!11!!" or "PG 3RAAA SHUCKSS!!11!!" or "WRESTLAANG ISHN'T REALL!!11!!". The list can continue, but I refuse to waste your, and my time.

"but you still watch it don't you?" actually no... no I don't =) there are a ton of reasons I don't watch wwe anymore, PG is one of them, but not really a main one, it irks me when matches are stopped or that storylines can't be as broad as they once were, but it is by far not the reason I don't watch anymore, jus another piece of the puzzle for me... and yeah for the love of god, let this be the last one on the pg shit

Isha my dear. WWE is not a cycle. WWE is an oppurtunist. It takes the oppurtunity it needs to get what it wants. The Attitude era was made so that it could eliminate the competition (ECW/WCW). The post Attitude Era was the point where they calm things down. WWE saw the opurtunity of a life time with the kids, so they went to...the PG ERA. With the PG era, the parents will approve of letting their children watch the WWE (blah blah blah blah). Kids love to see their heroes (blah blah blah). Kids want to dress like their heroes (blah blah blah). In comes the merchandise and its profit. And what do you know...MONEY!

The PG era is not bad at all. It is merely the new era in which the company is more financially stable than ever.

But seriously, this thread shows a lack of originality. C'mon, is this really happening? Seeing these types of threads are getting annoying. I would have certainly tought hat the main battle between AE vs. PG would have been in JGlass14's thread. (Sigh) Now I just await the first person to say something like "PG SUCKS!" so I can counter argue.

I think us old folks are nostalgic about mid to late 90's pro wrestling. It was a great time. There was a lot of fun, a lot of excitement, but perhaps we need to let go of the past. Or at least let that era be what it was and continue forward. Try to be positive about the current product instead of holding on to the past. There is plenty of stuff in the WWE to look forward to. And there are alternatives to the product.
Damn me for being completely reasonable.

Very true as well. But you know it's sort of like a cycle. You know it.

I still think the PG Era will continue until the kids grow up and become more mature. Just because, that's what it's been like since the 80's.

No Blood, chair shots to the head, cursing, choking, Miz getting a push (because he makes media appearances and can talk, not because he can wrestle) , Kelly not being able to show her tits (but they let her rape the ring by trying to wrestle), no type of sexual skits (and most of the divas can't wrestle so they are pretty much dead), story-lines having to be pulled because of the rating! That's not bad to you? How about the rating dropping week after week? Add to the fact that they have 70% of the better wrestlers in WWE yet still WWE can't keep a good rating, is that proof enough?

Everybody knows about cycles blablbla cursing not doing anything really and all that stuff. The only people who hate PG rating are the ones who can't let the past be the past and they fell in love with A.E. to the point they dont watch wrestling because the content is different.(meaning no cursing blood bla blabla ).To them i say...If you want cursing watch stand-up comedy or violent films or sth.For the naked divas watch some fkn good porn and blood u can go with gore movies. There u go.

On topic : No PG was never a bad thing it was just made out to be bad by the grinch gang.

I would rather watch Sponge Bob Square Pants with my 10 month old son than tune into PG WWE. I haven't watched WWE regularly in 8 years, but when i do i feel like i'm watching something that caters only to women and children. Like Mr. Awesome said before, WWE is an opportunist and wrestling is business. They wiped out the competition they had before the PG Era and with the PG Era they have stabilized wrestling so they can profit and so competition will be stifled. So yes the PG Era really is that bad, it's got almost all of my peers and me turned off wrestling completely. I really hope it comes to an end and the only way it can is if TNA can (gasp) become really competitive in the ratings. I'm cheering TNA on so that WWE is forced to put out better programming so that all of us wrestling fans can have much better programming to look forward to. I really want a reason to regularly start watching WWE (and TNA) again.

I shake my head when i hear a PG defender speak ill toward the Attitude Era they probably weren't old enough or smart enough to ever understand. Attitude Era 'grinches', as one poster labeled them, likely loved wrestling, like I did, from the time of Hulk Hogan's first Title reign right up until about the time The Rock and Steve Austin left wrestling. They all didn't just like the Attitude Era and disappeared when it ended, like some PG defenders seem to think. I feel like I speak for a majority of wrestling fans from my generation who do not watch wrestling regularly anymore as most everyone i know agrees with me on when wrestling started to suck hard. PG lovers who have their John Cena and their Edge (snore) really don't have any idea how much better their extremely stale obsession could be. All they understand is what they grew up with or what they've grown accustom to being spoonfed. We all know babies and children will eat and love whatever they are spoonfed, whether it be something absolutely delicious or completely disgusting, because they have no prior food eating experience to draw upon. My generation loved the programming it was spoonfed but it was spoonfed something awesome and it stayed awesome right through the Attitude Era until WWE became the only major player in the game. When wrestling's best entertainers The Rock and Steve Austin left and charisma-lacking chumps like John Cena and Triple H took their place and began being shoved down our throats as 7 and 8 time World Champs, that's when most wrestling fans from my generation had enough and took their ratings elsewhere.

Plain and simple, PG Era sucks, it's stupid, there's too much emphasis on clean wrestling and too little emphasis on originality. Also too little emphasis on complicated (and intriguing) storylines (minus the one going on right now in TNA). To all those PG lovers, go watch Spongebob or something so wrestling can gain back its attitude. And to those of you who want your wrestling to always be two guys doing the same carbon copy amazing moves on each other for 20 minutes non stop week after week, go watch gay porn or something. I want my wrestling to be a mix of everything great, not just PG acceptable shit.

I used to not miss a minute of RAW in the Attitude Era.

I now seldom watch an entire RAW. I'll catch the main event and read the highlights at wrestlezone.com but that's about it.

Honestly though...for me it's less about the lack-of-Attitude and more about the completely UNcompelling wrestlers and storylines. Orton and Cena do nothing for me as a fan, nor does Seamus. The Miz at least tries to be a good heel and is the only one that can cut a decent promo, from the limited work I've seen but honestly, for me, the hallmark of the PG Era is less about the lack-of-Attitude and more about being simply BORING.

Oh look - Cena just won another Monday night main event.

:zzzz:

Pg isn't really a bad thing, I don't know how some could forget this, but: When Smackdown was on UPN 2001-2003 maybe 2004 as well.

It was rated PG, and did Smackdown suck then? I would say no...

In addition, WCW Monday Nitro was PG during the height of the nWo angle (96-98), and when Vince Russo got there and brought edgier content, their programming really went downhill.

Yes exactly, So the answer would be " No Wwe Pg is not a bad thing" since its been proven time an time again, it works to still draw people, money etc etc...

The PG era blows... It's completely marketed towards kids and pushes old school fans out...

They are failing to produce new stars... The ratings, buyrates, and stock are dropping...

But hey! Linda might buy herself a Senate seat...

That's all it is about... Vince has made more than enough money in the business and it looks like his grapefruits have shreveled into raisens... All so Linda can become a Senator...

There is not one star on the roster that can become the next Austin or Rock...

And it really doesn't matter if it's PG or not... The writing just blows... If you need prove of that, the biggest angle in the company is centered around a bunch of rookies... The storyline is falling apart because Super Cena already got DDT on the concrete and came back to beat two of their strongest members by himself... Skip is hurt, Danielson took himself out of the angle because of a rookie mistake... Now the only one left with any talent is Barret... And that is who is involved in the best angle WWE has put out in 5 years... It's pathetic...

The only reason I watch WWE anymore is because my DVR records it and I am usually up at weird times when nothing else is on...

And for the people who think itms a cycle... If Linda wins, we are doomed into the cartoon era for a lot longer than you think... There is no way they will go back to the Attitude Era with her in that big of a role in the Government...

I just wish TNA would start writing better stuff... Their young stars are better than WWE's in my opinion...

Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, Cody Rhodes, Alberto Del Rio, Hart Dynasty.... Etc...

Those guys are WWE's future... It's not looking good...

Unless WWE steals (or takes back) guys like Beer Money (Especially Robert Roode), The Pope, Anderson, and AJ... I see no real future stars in WWE... Nobody that can carry the ball for the company...

Hopefully one day TNA will rise and utilize the stars they have and stop producing storylines that are left unexplained... Then maybe they can become big enough to force WWE to change modes and actually look for the next Austin, Rock, or HBK... Until then, old school fans are fucked...

theres no cycle, its just coincidence. wwe was never supposed to be edgy, it was supposed to be like it was in the 80s, truth is the attitude era happened because vince was desperate and almost out of business, so he had to do something that goes completely against his beliefs, hes a conservative republican, he doesnt like that you know it, and if you hear interviews with wrestlers, even when you watch the monday night wars dvd you will see that he was desperate.
There is no cycle, wwe just sucks cause ppl dont try hard enough in that company because you will just watch it anyway, and thats the wrong mentality. I dont watch it, id feel insulted if i did and way too frustrated.

like making out with trish stratus infront of his wife

making ppl kiss his ass live on tv

having live sex shows on raw

having his daughter get a boob job

having hbk showing off his ass on tv

and the list goes on and on completely against his beliefs :lmao::lmao:

Look, I'm an old-school fan that has watched wrestling as far back as I can remember (probably '84 or so). I don't watch WWE or TNA wrestling regularly for the same exact reason. Let me tell you it is NOT the fact the WWE's content is PG rating that is ruining their show.

Poor writing is poor writing regardless of how edgy their show is. And shitty matches are still shitty matches. Look back to the 1980's. That was a golden-age for wrestling. Rarely was the product ever beyond PG. But why was it good then and not now? There were compelling story angles and better ring psychology. They even would spend 6 months to a year building interest in to angles with a big climax.

But just to show you that PG rating isn't making a difference. Most people who can watch RAW can also watch TNA. TNA has a way edgier product, but are losing royally in the ratings.

I agree with EVERY single thing that you say. The only thing i see now... OMG Super cena beats Nexus in a Flower Patch Of Death Match.,, what a sirprise.... The writing DOES blow, the last thing that can make WWE any worse is if they let Vince Russo be writer. Oh god... I cant even imagine that. The PG era blows, and i might as well hire John Wilkes Booth to take Lind McMahon out... lol

As long as it's entertaining and the story lines are fresh and different I could care less what rating it is.

I dont know if it is the PG era that sucks, or just a coincedence and it is the writing and booking. Because regardless WWE blows at the moment, and no I dont watch it. In fairness this is a recent developement, since Shawn retired and HHH got injured, but there is just nothing that holds me. I read the results each week and nothing compells me to watch it ( i am a NZer so dont get it until Friday, not Monday, and Sunday not Friday). I used to buy every PPV and havent bought one since Wrestlemania, and cant see me doing so again, unless something drastic happens.

Evidently some people can't wait another 5 years or so until we have a more mature product again. :lmao: Personally I don't see what everyone on here complains about. The only thing I find annoying about the current WWE product is that they don't blade at times where, I feel, it would enhance the match. Hell in the cell, and the elimination chamber just aren't the same to me. I have been watching wrestling since at least '87 and to be honest by the end of the attitude era I got tired of seeing someone blade in every match and covered in blood. I also don't give damn about the divas regardless of whether they are in a bra and panties match or stinking it up now on Raw. If that's what it takes for you to enjoy the WWE, just go rent a porn and move out of your mother's basement. The superstars the "E" has right now are better than they have had in the past 10 years. Give me the miz, cm punk, BD any day over the old washed up has-beens that are currently in TNA.

To me its a bad thing from the perspective as a fan. But looking at it from McMahons view its genious. I've been watching WWE since I was probably 2 years old in all seriousness. Even if I know the PPV is gonna suck, I still watch it. I cant help it. And Vince knows there are people like me. He knows that people will always watch his product even if they rag on the company and mostly watch late 90's early 00's WWE.

Obviously now he is making more money, and with the new generation of fans out there, they have become used to the PG product and probably dont know anything prior to 2007. TNA isnt doing anything to steal the unhappy WWE fans and unless you watch ROH or another indy promotion there is nothing else but WWE.

Another way its great for them, is if people cant stand the product what do they do? They make dvd's that have some awesome matches before WWE went PG, and they make even more money off of those.

So really, IMO the PG era sucks but I still buy most of their non-ppv dvd's. From the owners view, its a win-win and Vinny Mac is laughing all the way to the bank.

Never Ever had a problem with the PG era at all. My only problem is the damn script writers. There hasn't been one decent feud the whole 2010 year. If they let Feuds last more then one damn ppv, and let there be more rivals and more one on one championship matches instead of fatal 4 ways and 6 pack matches, the WWE would be OK.

i'm sure what i'm about to say has been said in some form in this thread (i'm not reading everybodys post)

WWE PG doesn't bother me too much. i don't give a damn if WWE is TV Y7 (for children 7 and up)...the rating means nothing to me. its all in the product. if the product is good then who gives a damn what the rating is...the problem i have with WWE is the product has sucked so i stopped watching and instead started reading spoilers.

people will continue to complain about the PG Era and others will complain about the people who complain in the first place. but at the end of the day its pointless. 10 years from now the PG Era will be over and the kid fans of today will be bitching about what will probably be known as The 2nd Attitude Era (or something like that)
