Admittedly the vague enough title of this thread allows American directors to replace British counterparts but let's try and stay with non-English speaking directors where possible.
Akira Kurosawa is one of my all time favourite directors and if given the chance, I firmly believe that he could have made The Last Samurai the quintessential East-meets-West film of all time.
In his films Throne of Blood, Yojimo and Ran, he transposed Western influences into his Samurai era films with beautiful effect. Replace Tom Cruise with someone like Paul Newman, allow Kurosawa free reign over Japanese casting and you have a stone cold classic on your hands.
I'll either debate that or see what the WZ members can come up with, so have at it.
