Currently, Jerry "The King" Lawler is known as either the not-so funny Comedic Relief on the three man broadcast team for Monday Night Raw, or as the guy who had a stroke on a live broadcast of said show. But what many of the young kids these days don't realize is that Jerry Lawler is literally the most decorated champion in the history of professional wrestling. With over a hundred and fifty championships, Jerry Lawler has practically done it all in the world of Pro-Wrestling.
Debuting in 1970, Jerry Lawler spent most of his time in the ring as the ultimate bad guy. His Piledriver on Kerry Von Erich is still, to this day, one of the most infamous moments in territorial history. It's the same Piledriver that caused a legal uproar in the state of Tennessee where it took place. Perhaps you may not realize, but a lot of Jerry Lawler can be seen in present day and past stars such as Stone Cold, The Rock, Zeb Colter, Kane, The Undertaker, Jeff Jarrett, Owen Hart, Bret Hart, and perhaps most notably... Vince McMahon.
That's right. Jerry "The King" Lawler is linked tighter to big Vinny more so than Bret Hart, Stone Cold, The Rock, or any of those "Attitude Era" stars ever could be. How? You might ask... Well it's simple.
In the year 1992, the WWF's owner Vince McMahon would get his first taste as a major heel when he "bought out" the company of Jerry Lawler known then as the United States Wrestling Alliance. This would then see stars from WWF and USWA appear in the other promotion's territory, as well as their own, and fight for the right to see which company was going to survive. In short, it was the WCW/ECW invasion before the WCW/ECW invasion even happened.
During this rivalry, Jerry Lawler would go on to wrestle and help mold stars such as "Stunning" Steve Austin, Flex Cavana [aka The Rock], Bret "The Hitman" Hart, "The Rocket" Owen Hart, and even helped make "The Punisher" into the 21-0 WrestleMania juggernaut known as The Undertaker. And a little added bonus... Jerry Lawler could also be credited with helping to make Paul Heyman into the who he is, after their rivalry in 1987... So in a way, Paul Heyman is a "Jerry Lawler Guy".
Also, a little uknown fact on April 12, 2007... The Immortal Hulk Hogan himself officially backed out of a match against Lawler because "NBC stars were not allowed to work with VH1 stars"... A ploy that some fans say Hogan did just because he didn't want to be outshined by the GREATEST WRESTLER EVER.
So this year, don't back a burning giant or an overpaid movie star. Back a wrestler, back a guy who loves this business so much he would literally give his life to entertain us night in and night out. Back a man that can only be recognized as... THE KING!
