Slightly Autistic
I stole this off another forum. It's a bit spammy but I hope it stays open. Each poster should only need one post for their log anyway.

Very simple, watch a film, write it down, date and give it a score. Here's mine from the past couple of months as an example.

You can discuss peoples score etc, but you simply edit your post when you want to add to your log.

They're usually an intresting read at the very least.

The new rules for this thread are as follows:

If you are going to post a movie, please offer up a small review of what you have seen. It doesn't need to be huge or detailed as if you are writing for a professional magazine. Nope, all it needs to be is whether you liked it or not and why. Feel free to offer a rating too.

And that's it.

Sam's Log:

10/07/09 - Transformers 2 - 2/10
11/07/09 - Volver - 7/10
11/07/09 -Talk to Her - 8/10
17/07/09 - All About My Mother - 8/10
12/9/09 Wanted - 6/10
12/9/09 Gladiator - 7/10
13/9/09 In The Loop - 8/10
14/9/09 Ratatouille - 4/10
17/9/09 Unforgiven - 5/10
20/9/09 Rocky - 6/10

That's pretty much all I can think of. I'm sure I'll add more before that as soon as I can be bothered to estimate a date. I enjoyed In The Loop considerably more than most films I've seen lately and I decided that Gladiator isn't as overrated as I previously thought. Still very overrated though.

Dates are probably wrong on several of these, but oh well. I actually used to do this on my own for nearly a year. I've got a notebook with hundreds of movies/scores written down, used to keep track of them for some reason. Anyways, here's some of the films I've seen as of late, many of which I don't remember the exact date for seeing them. Infact I don't think I can remember any of their dates.

Oh and Jake...you gave Yes Man a higher rating than Let the Right One In? You ought to be ashamed.

I use a five star ranking. None of that superfluous ten star nonsense.

Martyrs - 4.5/5
Oldboy - 5/5
The Abandoned - 2.5/5
La Cabina - 4.5/5
Inside - 4.5/5
[Rec] - 4.5/5
Quarantine - 3.5/5
Friday the 13th Part 4: The Final Chapter - 4/5
One Missed Call (2004) - 2.5/5
Halloween 2 (2009) - 3/5
Inglourious Basterds - 4/5
District 9 - 5/5
Funny People - 3/5
Deep Rising - 3/5
Lord of Illusions - 2.5/5
The Poseidon Adventure - 3.5/5

That's all I can think of off of the top of my head. Wow, that list is almost entirely comprised of horror films.

Yeah I don't remember dates but I'll list the latest movies I've watched and will add on over the next few months.

The Hangover - 7/10
Garden State - 9/10
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 8.5/10
Public Enemies - 7/10
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - 8/10
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - 9/10
Pineapple Express - 6/10
Rolemodels - 7/10
The Marine - 4/10
The Dark Knight - 8.5/10
Elephant - 8.5/10
Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull - 6.5/10
Mallrats - 7/10

These are what I can remember over the past month or so. Will update if/when I remember more or watch something else.

I think these are all the films I've watched since I reviewed Inglourious Basterds and District 9 in their respective threads. At least, these are the ones that come to mind; I really feel like I'm forgetting a couple of movies. But anyway, here they are:

Old Boy - 10/10
Repo Man - 8/10
City of God - 10/10
Birthday Girl - 5.5/10
The Vanishing - 4/10
The Thing Called Love - 7/10

In the upcoming days, I plan on watching Memories of Murder, Blood & Bone, How Much Do You Love Me?, Sheitan, Secrete Admirer, and maybe Jennifer's Body if I decide to go see it.

Old Boy - 10/10

Excellent, I just watched this yesterday again as well. Simply a masterpiece, manages to be both beautiful and haunting at the same time. If only I could go back and see it for the first time again.

Repo Man - 8/10

All kinds of epic. I fucking love that movie, glad you gave it a viewing. Cult classic right there.

City of God - 10/10

Another masterpiece and likely one of the greatest films of the last decade, from any country. City of Men was a letdown though.

The Vanishing 4/10

I hope you're talking about the American remake here JMT, or else I'll be quite disappointed in you.

I hope you're talking about the American remake here JMT, or else I'll be quite disappointed in you.

Yes, I am. I really wish I would have known about the other version before watching this one, because it does look great and I would have much rathered sit through that one. The American version just has a TERRIBLE ending, and the broad who played Kiefer's second love interest is one of the worst, most annoying actresses I've ever had the displeasure of watching. What could have been a masterpiece ended up being a piece of shit because of those two things.

Oh and Jake...you gave Yes Man a higher rating than Let the Right One In? You ought to be ashamed.

Yeah I know, but I'm basing it on enjoyment at the time. I've seen Let The Right One In twice before that viewing this year and I was drunk when I say Yes Man. Thus the scores.

I use a five star ranking. None of that superfluous ten star nonsense.

You do .5 ratings, silly. You may as well do percentages.

Here's a quick update with the last three movies I've watched:

Misery - 8/10
La Haine - 10/10
Memories of Murder - 9.5/10

La Haine is honestly one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. Fantastic film. I watched it twice, and it's definitely now one of my favorite movies. A huge thank you goes out to Tdigs for recommending this to me.

Memories of Murder is another great film from a Tdigs recommendation. Never did I expect so much humor in this one. It was hilarious, but also very exciting and thought provoking. Sam... I highly recommend this one to you since you're a fan of Zodiac.

And Misery, of course, is something I had already seen and just watched the other night for the hell of it when it was on Starz Encore. It's as fun today as it was back in the gap. Katey Bates is just phenomenal in it.

Here are the last ten movies I saw. I don't remember the date I saw them, but, I'll just say 15 September 2009 for all of them, as I watched them all last month.

15 September Observe And Report 10/10

15 September Adventureland 10/10

15 September The Year Of Living Dangerously 9/10

15 September Unrest 5/10

15 September Suspiria 10/10

15 September The Asthenic Syndrome 5/10

15 September To Live And Die In L.A. 6/10

15 September The Brothers Solomon 5/10

15 September Jennifer's Body 5/10

15 September I Love You, Man 3/10

4 October Crank: High Voltage 8.5/10

6 October West Side Story 1/10

7 October Paranormal Activity 7/10

8 October Trick 'r Treat 4/10

13 October Paranormal Activity (second time) 4/10

24 October Bad Timing 6/10

26 October Orphan 7/10

28 October The Ring 7.5/10

Man, I might be getting a bit too lenient in my ratings. Unrest would definitely have gotten a 3/10 if I wasn't so damn attracted to Corri English, and The Brothers Solomon was a pretty fucking stupid and trite movie, but I'll be damned if it didn't have a heart.

Update:

Untamed Heart - 6/10
Eastern Promises - 9.5/10
Sheitan - 7/10
Secrete Admirer - 6.5/10

I put on Untamed Heart the other night after just reading the info on Showtime or whatever. It dragged at times, but overall it was a sweet little film. Marisa Tomei was adorable, as she always is, and Christian Slater put on a pretty good performance, as he did frequently back in those days. It's a shame what has happened to him.

I saw Eastern Promises when it first came out, and decided to watch it again Thursday for whatever reason. And it's still as awesome as it was the first time I saw it. Great film.

Sheitan seems pretty fucking ridiculous at first, but if you pay attention to the dinner scene and all the bible references, it's actually a pretty damn intelligent film. However, what hurts it is that, outside of Eve (played by the absolutely stunning Roxane Mesquida), there is not a likable character in this movie. I mean, Vincent Cassel as Joseph is funny as hell and of course you dig him as the villain, but my God.. the "good guys" were all annoying as shit and you sat there wanting to see them get killed off. I thought American Horror remakes had a bad habit of casting people like that, but man this film has that problem worse than any other I think I've ever seen. But other than that... still a very enjoyable film for the most part, and it is fucking hilarious. Check it out if you haven't.

And Secrete Admirer was just a fun 80's teen movie, as I expected.

Sheitan was a pretty good film. There were some flaws, but, as I have no doubt mentioned before, Vince Cassel is golden in anything he does. And, yes, Roxane Mesquida is an unbelievably gorgeous woman. I recommend Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl if you want to see more of her work (and also what she looks like completely naked...if you'll indulge me in a moment of perversion here, I would just like to say that you won't be disappointed in the least).

Seriously, 10/10? That would imply that it's actually, y'know, good. A classic even. I know some of my scores are shit, but I have an excuse, I don't like film anymore.

I gave Observe & Report 4/10. A very generous 4/10.

Hey, I disagree with disappearing from this topic because I posted in it and that's kinda bogus. Don't really understand why. It's pretty odd but I'm forming sentences. I would post my list again but I forgot it so I'll just finish typing now. Hopefully that's enough words, maybe I'll type more...I don't know. But this seems good so I'll peace out. Oh and I just finally saw the original Stepfather...kinda disappointing but will most likely be better than the remake. I'd give it 3 out 5 stars. Indeed.

So, Jake... when are we going to get an update from you, huh?

Anyway, here's another one from me, since I know you all love them. :icon_wink:

Blood & Bone - 9/10
Ichi the Killer - 10/10
Crying Freeman - 7/10
Renegade (aka Blueberry) - 3/10
Dobermann - 7/10
The Whole Nine Yards - 8/10
Point Break - 9.5/10
Man in the Moon - 8/10

Let me tell you guys something, Blood & Bone is without a doubt the absolute best American Martial Arts movie this decade. It is fucking FANTASTIC. From the fight scenes, to the acting, to the story.... it is a great, entertaining movie. Michael Jai White is one of my favorite actors, and this film only made me a bigger fan. He was unbelievably great in this. Please check this out as soon as you can, especially you Jake and if you're reading this, you too IC. I know you two in particular would love this movie.

So, in case you haven't noticed, I've been watching pretty much Vincent Cassel's entire filmpgraphy as of late. All I have left to see outside of his recent stuff that isn't available is The Brotherhood of the Wolf and The Crimson Rivers, which I will check out in the upcoming weeks. Anyway, I've enjoyed all of them so far, but Renegade turned out to be a huge, HUGE disappointment. It was just a totally boring movie that went nowhere, and had nothing to say. It just wanted to be weird, and show some cool graphics. But I thought it was a terrible movie, unfortunately. It gets a 3 though for some very good acting from Cassel, and especially Michael Madsen, who played an awesome villain, which unfortunately went to waste because of the film's pretentiousness. And then there's Dobermann... while it was good and I gave it a fairly high rating, I was still somewhat disappointed with it. There just wasn't enough Cassel and Monica Bellucci for my liking (also, the subtitles on my DVD were fucking crap). Nevertheless, there was some awesome, absolutely brutal stuff throughout this movie that makes it a must see. Also, this guy named Tchéky Karyo played a sadistic cop, and man was he an asshole. A true heel in cinema. I could not wait to see him die. He was very, very good.

I saw The Whole Nine Yards when it was first released on video, but that was a long time ago. All I remembered from it was Amanda Peet's nude scene (How could anyone ever forget that?), but other than that... I didn't remember a damn thing from it, which is why I decided to finally watch this again, and I'm glad I did because it's a very fun movie. I love Matthew Perry, and I'm also a fan of Bruce Willis, so that was going to be enough for me to enjoy this regardless, but it's actually a very funny, clever movie. I'm very glad I decided to watch it again.

I turned on Point Break the other night when I was going to sleep, and it was the beginning of the movie. And yeah... I ended up watching the entire thing. Don't know why as I've seen it a thousand times, but I guess it just never fails to pull me in. It's one of my all time favorites. My only gripe about it is the casting of Lori Petty and Gary Busey, which is why this gets a 9.5 instead of a 10, because they were just awful in this. Awful. Nevertheless, not even those two could ruin a masterpiece like Point Break. RIP Swayze; one of my all time favorite performances in this film.

And can you believe earlier was my first time ever watching Man in the Moon? For years my mom has asked me to watch this, as we're both big Reese Witherspoon fans, but for some strange reason... I just never got around to it. But I'm glad I finally did. Reese was just fantastic in this, and so fucking adorable. And Jason London was great as well; definitely his best performance outside of Dazed and Confused. But yeah... great, touching movie. Kind of short, and the characters could have been given more depth with an extra 30 minutes, but still... very, very good movie.

So, Jake... when are we going to get an update from you, huh?

I have a very well organized system. I have a note pad with roughly 30 lines per page. One film per line, that measn I have to watch 30 films before my next update. But because you asked nicely I'll update it one day this week.

Ichi the Killer - 10/10

10/10? Must be an American thing. Like The Departed & Forrest Gump.

Dobermann - 7/10
The Whole Nine Yards - 8/10

I think you got those scores the wrong way round then added a couple onto The Whole Nine Yards for comedy effect. Unless you're rating Amanda Peet's boobs. Then you're probably on the money.

I'll look for it. Michael Jai Whit is shit though. Not the shit, just shit.

Tchéky Karyo

Haven't seen him in anything for a while. I blame Hollywood, they used him and spat him out. Like they did with me after puberty.

Updated for the benefit of jmt. My lack of interest in film is apparent. A Short Film About Killing? My opinion: A Shit Film About Killing. Benny's Video? My opinion: Should've erased it.

The fact that even films with Rampage, Stone Cold & Bill Goldberg bored me shows how far I've afllen.

Loved Princess, mind.

So, you gave Yuzna's Society a 7/10 and Princess a 9/10? I knew you were a sick man at heart. Have you seen Street Trash yet? If you liked Society, I think you'll like that one. Also, I can't wait to see what you give Onna Harakiri Sakuhinshuu.

Me and xfear made a film called Necro Nanny, so yeah, pretty sick.

Nope, what's it about?

Do I own it? Pretty sure they won't have than in HMV, I'll track it down.

It's about a colony of homeless people in the NYC/New Jersey area, with some of them melting in disgusting and gory fashion after they drink a cheap liquor called Tenafly Viper. Its special effects are similar to those in Society, and it's just as politically incorrect and funny. It showcases both necrophilia and a game of keep the castrated penis away from the guy we just cut it off of. I highly, highly recommend it.

As for the Harakiri thing, that's just a bunch of topless women committing seppuku. For a long time, it was a hard-to-find underground series just like the Guinea Pig series. If you want to go that route, then you also need to see the following as well: Suicide Dolls, Muzan E, Girl School Hell 1999, Kyoko Vs. Yuki, Red Room 1, and Red Room 2.

Sounds familiar, but I've never been to New Jersey before. Anything with necrophelia in it needs to be in my DVD collection.

Sounds like something I could happily miss. I've seen Suicide Dolls, I think, many years ago.

I assume, then, that you have all of Jörg Buttgereit's films, as well as Lucker The Necrophagous? There's another film from the 70s called Love Me Deadly, but I have yet to find it. I rented it from netflix once, but they instead sent me some old western; I didn't ask them to send me another copy.

Any others I'm missing out on here? I wouldn't really count D'Amato's Beyond The Darkness, and I've already seen Kissed (which I didn't think was very good).

Our ratings sytem is a lot stricter than yours, there's also not the demand for obscure films like there will be in America. It'd probably be easier for me to get hold of a film with actual necrophelia.

Optimum are starting to release lost of older/stranger films, but Tartan went bust so there's not really a distributor that puts out films like that. Anchor Bay seem to have gone very quiet as of late as well.

Wait, I thought Britain had Vipco? Did that go bust as well? Also, I think all of the films I mentioned (save for the Japanese ones) should be available in Britain. All of the films I mentioned (save for Love Me Deadly) were made in the Continent, so, I'd imagine that they were available in your neck of the woods before ours. Anyway, didn't the BBFC stop their crusade against video nasties a long time ago?

Never heard of it.

Anything Japanese is easy to get hold off. Anything else and it's a struggle. It has to be something special for the few distributors we've got to pick it up.

They're still very strict, mostly down to the video nasties. Not much get's banned, but almost everything get's cut.
