Oldschool Money In the Bank

I don't think this topic has been done before.

Basically.... If the Money In the Bank concept existed before 2005, who would you like to have seen win it and why? Would these wins result in world title reigns? How would the cash in be done?

I would go as far back as to have guys like Ted Dibiase or Piper win it way back in the day and cash in on Hogan. That would have been absolutely unthinkable back then. Dibiase could have been perfect for a first winner, given his gimmick as The Million Dollar Man and the name of the concept being Money In the Bank. I'd have him cash in on Hogan after a long match to take advantage of his weak status and win the WWF Championship reign he deserved. Sure, this is how pretty much all of the modern MITB winners do it, but that's how it should be done because the first time or so should be done like that to help the concept get over like they did with Edge and Punk. Then later on other guys like Bret Hart could have won by cashing in for a legit fair match. I think it could have worked back then and produced some new stars and helped people get over faster than they did in real life.

Discuss!

Yes, Ted DiBiase was my first choice as well, but I wanted him to buy the briefcase from the person who actually won it. Also, I would have had Owen win the briefcase and then cash it in against Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 10, after he had won the title from Yokozuna. Having Bret wrestle three times in one night would give him an excuse as to why he lost, and Owen would get some mega-credibility for beating his brother twice in one night.

Actually I don't like the MITB concept much in the first place. Yes, it does give rather exciting spots to guys who were high flyers, but has there REALLY been a star made BECAUSE of a MITB win? Let's look at the winners in order so we can get an idea of where I'm coming from:

Edge: He had already won the title at least once and was an established veteran of the ring already.
RVD: He was already an established star and really only won because Edge interfered.
Kennedy: Probably would have become a top star IF he hadn't gotten injured. Lost the case to Edge in the same way Edge cashed in his case.
CM Punk: Had already got a lot of attention before his first MITB win, God-awful first reign...Got more established for the second win.
Swagger: Humiliated by Santino before the win, humiliated by everyone after losing the title. Nil heat for his reign. Definitely not made a star.
Miz: He became a star through his nice long US title reign NOT the MITB win. He was built up the old-fashioned way.
Kane: See reasoning with Edge.
Del Rio: He was already a star via his loud mouth and a royal rumble win and a nice feud with Mysterio and Christian.
Daniel Bryan: Hasn't cashed in yet, but he was a star long before coming to WWE. WWE didn't MAKE him a star. They're merely capitalizing on his comparatively rich wrestling history, same as Punk.

On to the topic at hand: Piper, DiBiase, Owen and maybe Mr. Perfect would be the only ones that could have really benefited from the MITB concept. However, it being a different time, Piper and DiBiase were already well established so a title reign just would have been gravy. Mr. Perfect WAS the star at one point because at that time the IC title was worth just as much as the WWF title, if not more. Owen cemented himself as a star by beating Bret at WM 10 and certainly deserved a reign...too bad the Hart family exodus left Owen alone and being forced into that awful Blue Blazer gimmick that pretty much buried him...LITERALLY.

There is one superstar that could have benefited from it: Jeff Hardy. Ladder match with a very pissed off Big Evil Undertaker, earned his respect that night. Had MITB been right after that, Jeff would have definitely won.

He had not won a world title yet and he skyrocketed after he won. Yes he was established, but he was at best an established mid-carder and tag team specialist.

As for who I would have win it, I would have had someone like Jake the Snake win it because he would know exactly win to cash it in.

never gave this much thought so thanx for making this topic. my pic for first winner would of been mr. perfect. i would have him cash it in @ summerslam 1990 the same nite he lost the i.c. belt to texas tornado have him cash it on ultimate warrior after his steele cage match wth ravishing ric rude. other winner to choose would of been bam bam bigelo, rowdy piper, ricky the dradon steamboat and the honky tonk man

My bad, guess my history got a little fuzzy. And actually I never did think of Jake Roberts. Kudos for that one as I can actually see it being done.

I would like to have seen Money in the Bank in the mid 90's. I think it would have been a great gimmick to use at the first In Your House after Wrestlemania 11.

-Razor Ramon
-Owen Hart
-British Bulldog
-Hakushi
-Bam Bam Bigelow
-Bret Hart

Those six could have put on one hell of a show for the first Money In The Bank. Oh course I'd have Razor win.

Interesting idea, It'd have to have been a Ted DiBiase win to begin with, as it would have fitted the Million Dollar Man gimmick... have the WM4 tourney for that and not the title... Have Andre "beat Hogan" in a screwjob and cash in the same night.

From there make it a fixture at Summerslam each year. starting SS1989... my winners would be...

1989 - Rick Rude - Cash in against Savage or Warrior after they defeat DiBiase for the belt.
1990 - Mr. Perfect
1991 - Davey Boy Smith - The first guy to not succeed with his cash in, he'd get a run but not till the following year when...
1992 - Shawn Michaels
1993 - Ric Flair - Would have kept Flair in WWE at that time, which would have been useful.
1994 - Owen Hart
1995 - Diesel
1996 - Goldust
1997 - Brian Pillman - would have made a great title feud with Austin
1998 - Triple H
1999 - The Rock
2000 - Chris Benoit
2001 - Booker T
2002 - Chris Jericho
2003 - Matt Hardy
2004 - John Cena

DUDE!!!!!!! MITB has been making stars left and right!!!

It made Edge a main event star, it made RVD a main eventer, if Kennedy hadn't gotten hurt all the time he would of become a main event mainstay, it MADE CM Punk a star, and it elevated The Miz. You can't always have something be a win for you but it has made guys who they are today. The only ones that you can say it didn't work for was Kennedy(cause he got hurt) and Swagger(cause it was rushed).

MITB is the best idea WWE has had since The Royal Rumble. The Rumble doesn't always make someone a huge star but it has served its purpose much like MITB.

To Your Post: it would have been cool to see DiBiase, Savage, Bret, Owen, HBK, Razor, Austin, Rock, and Cena win it to elevate them to becoming a champion but if it had been implemented back then, it would be a very different match at the present time.

I would have like to see Brian Pillman win the Money In The bank if it existed around that time, I think he would have put on a gret a performance in a match like this. Owen Hart would have been a nice winner also. Perhaps even further back i would have liked to have seen Mr Perfect win the MITB and cash in for a Title run.

In reality it would have taken the place of King Of The Ring, it would not have been a ladder match but a tournament in those days...

First off...Kudos on a great thread. Its always fun as a fan integrating something old with something new. Anyways to the question at hand, i like some of the superstars people threw out there such as Owen, Pillman, Perfect, Davey, and DiBiase but I would also like to throw in a few guys who would fit the bill just right for this type of match. First off, The Macho Man Randy Savage. It would have been a perfect match for him, it would of showcased his "high flying" style more. Secondly I would have to say the same for Ricky Steamboat. It would have cemented his legacy more and seen as a legend sooner. Imagine if you will, Steamboat and Savage actually feuding over the briefcase and putting on even more stellar matches. I would also like to throw in Jimmy Snuka for the same reason i mentioned for Savage, just awesome at the time "INNOVATIVE HIGH FLYING". Short and sweet now id have Piper win it as a heel then in the process turning face. In attitude era id give it to Billy Gunn, thats what he needed to get more over as a main eventer and maybe have XPac win it and put on great matches only to maybe be the first to lose it, same with DLo. What do you guys think?
