-Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer is reporting that WWE Champion and Smackdown star Edge and has been telling those close to him that he will be leaving WWE when his contract with the company expires in 2012. No word on what Edge's future plans will include

Apparently Edge has been telling people close to him that he will be leaving after his contract expires. Now I dont know why he would want to leave, as he is the top star on SD right now and Champion.
But I can understand if he needs time off. Although Its doubtful but retirement is an option if he really wants to. Its possible that he could be like Batista, and want to leave because of the direction the company is going in.
I really dont think it will happen, But it is possible for a jump ship to TNA.

If Edge really does leave this will leave a bigger gap in main eventers than there already is.. Questions..

Why do you think Edge is leaving?
Do you think Edge will jump ship to TNA?
Or do you think this isn't true?

Edge said a couple of years ago I think that he was going to retire around this point. He'll be 39 years old by that point and has been in the wrestling business for a long time. A lot of wear and tear over that period of time so he's probably just going to retire and take it easy. I don't see him going to TNA in any capacity, just doesn't make sense for him to leave at all.

I think it's bullshit, because if someone says something on a dirtsheet, companies generally tend to stray away from that idea, or do something slightly different.

That being said, I think if Edge wanted to leave the WWE, it'll be because he wants to retire. He's been in the wrestling business for a long time, and I think he'd think it's his time to pass the torch (I ALSO think that it would be the perfect time to retire).

I don't think he'd jump ship to TNA, only because TNA's ship (lol) is sinking so fast, guys who used to draw go there, and kill any kind of momentum they've ever had in the wrestling business. Edge knows where his loyalties lie, and it's not with WCW2.0.

Edge himself has talked about retiring somewhat soon, so this report has some legs. I'll paraphrase, but essentially the work and the injuries has taken a lot of years off of his career.

This is a guy that has accomplished a shit load in his career. I can't think of anyone that has won the amount of individual titles and accolades as this man has. There is literally nothing left for this guy to prove.

If the body is broken down, and there is nothing left to give, there is honestly no reason for Edge to drag his career on and on. I'd much rather see this guy leave with some dignity, instead of be a pathetic shell of himself like a Hogan or Flair.

It's been fairly obvious for the last few years Edge is going to retire.. Every interview he has done , he has said he has "2 or 3 years left in him" before he is done with the buisness.. He's getting old, he spent a large portion of his career in those brutal TLC matchs in the Tag division.. The guy probably wants to be able to walk when he's 55 year's old. I see no issue with him letting his contract expire.

The last year or two he has been talking more and more about retirement... With Orton and Cena's popularity, and the rise of new young talent his spot just isn't there anymore. I expect Edge to have his swan song here over the next year or two. I'm excited to see how his career end's in the WWE.

While I tend to not look too much into what dirt sheets say, I think this one holds a bit of truth to it. Edge is getting up there in age and like Shocky said the injuries that Edge has sustained over the years have definitely shortened his career. He has suffered some serious injuries and the fact that he has been able to come back from them and still perform at a high level is impressive in its own right. Edge has pretty much accomplished everything to accomplish in the wrestling business. He has won multiple tag titles, mid cards title, and world titles. He has won a King of the Ring, a Royal Rumble and has probably main evented at each of the big four PPV. Plus he was a key component in the development of the TLC match. The guy has pretty much done it all.

If Edge does leave when his contract expires I think it'll be for good. I can't see him going to TNA, as he is a WWE guy through and through. The WWE stuck with him despite his injury concerns and he made the most out of pretty much every opportunity he was given. I consider Edge a legend in this business and I think he will sign some sort of legend deal with the WWE as I'm sure he'll want to stick around in some capacity and I'm sure the WWE would be thrilled to have him around as well.

Why do you think Edge is leaving?
I think he will be leaving!! He is getting old, and hasn't been same since injuries, he has slowed down and his matches are getting any better..

Do you think Edge will jump ship to TNA?
Nope, I think he'll hang up his wrestling boots for good when he leaves the WWE.

Or do you think this isn't true?
It could be.. but then again, you never know!

I think if he does leave, he'll end up retiring from wrestling all together. As others have said, he's mentioned that around this age, he would think about retiring.

There's absolutely no chance he'll go to TNA. What would be the point? He's on great terms with the WWE. He's a main eventer and a future Hall of Famer. There is simply no reason for him to go to TNA.

I think if anything, it would cheapen his legacy if he leaves to go to TNA. He has nothing more to prove in wrestling. Of course they'd slap the TNA belt on him, but that means nothing and would prove nothing.

As of now, their is now chance he signs eith TNA. He just is going to hang up the boots obviously. As his career as reigned on, I am actually shocked he performs this or or even at all.

I hate to see Edge leave, but his body has taken a toll. I cannot blame him for possibly wanting to step away when his contract is up. The last 7 or so years, Edge has had some serious injuries.

The man has done so much in his WWE career. Anything he does now is icing on top of the cake. I'm sure he will be involved with the WWE in some way or another if does leave in 2012.

Anyone thinking he will end in TNA is full of it.

Why do you think Edge is leaving?
Injuries, not wanting to face the ridiculous WWE schedule, more rest for his banged up body.

Do you think Edge will jump ship to TNA?
Highly doubt so, especially if the Hardys and friends are still there. But never say never as maybe he would welcome the chance to wrestle on a more relaxed schedule.

Or do you think this isn't true?
Personally, I could see Edge being given a non-wrestling on-air role, like a authority figure or a manager/mentor if he is wrestling less. Can't see him leaving WWE if the WWE wants to retain him in some capacity.

I don't get why this is news/people are surprised by this. This has been going around for the better part of the year.

Why do you think Edge is leaving?

Obviously his injury. His Achilles' Tendon being torn to shreds took many years out of his athletic schedule.

Do you think Edge will jump ship to TNA?

Oh my God. Anyways, hell no. For one, Matt is there and we know the story on those two. Second, it'd be a waste of time in my opinion. He's on top of the world in WWE: 10 time world champion, multi-tag team champion, possibly making millions...he's got it all. There's no reason for him to go to TNA.

Or do you think this isn't true?

Since this has been going around since last year, I find it true. A big tear in the Achilles' Tendon will fuck just about anyone up, and it's a miracle Edge is still performing. I think he's going to hand up the boots in 2012.

Edge has always been one of my favorite superstars and while it hurts me to think about things like this, I can't avoid the thoughts forever. Edge has gone through so, so many injuries in his career and most people who have suffered injuries as much as Edge have never attained the status that he has achieved. He is no doubt one of the veterans in the WWE ring and he has definitely left his mark in the WWE.

If he does plan to retire in 2012, and this is his last full year in the WWE, I really hope it is a great one because Edge has always entertained me, and he is a great superstar. He may never play a babyface as well as he did a heel ever again... but he has achieved greatness on both sides of the character spectrum, and he has achieved accolades all over the corporate ladder, from master manipulator, to a 10 time WWE Champion... which is followed by a long list of gold underneath it.

I think he will retire. I hope he gets a story book ending like Trish Stratus.
I don't think he will go to TNA.

You know, I respect the hell out of Edge. Growing up, Edge was one of my most favorite guys to watch in the WWE. After years of unreal injuries and being away from his family, he truly deserves to retire peacefully and get inducted into the Hall Of Fame. If he decides to leave soon, it'll leave a big hole, especially from one of the most respected veterans today.

I don't really see him going to TNA nor do I want to. He's built an incredible legacy of championships and matches and going to TNA would only ruin it BIG TIME. I don't think it's worth the money, publicity, and time for him. And his body has been hurt a whole lot. I wouldn't waste my time there...

As some people have mentioned, he will likely stay with the WWE in some capacity. Personally, I would love to see him as a commentator. The King is rumored to be calling it quits soon so imagine Michael Cole and Edge as the RAW commentators.

I could see him as the general manager for a period of time on Smackdown or RAW too...

Please don't shoot me but a lot of people are laughing at Matt for his weight problem, is it me or did Edge lost his shape too? He look fat yesterday in his match. If so then it may be because of injuries and that he can't keep up with the schedule and everything.

Edge said on numerous occasion that he was planning to retire soon in a year or two.

I don't think he will go to TNA as long as the Hardys are still running the show either.

I think he will just retire and comeback from time to time like Stone Cold and others. I would really like an Edge and Christian reunion before he leaves, but that may just be me.

Why do you think Edge is leaving?
First off: Age, and Injuries, and simply because he's done it all in WWE:
-10 time World Champion
- the first ever money in the bank winner
-royal rumble winner
He has been involved in the greatest TLC matches.
He is Tag Team specialist, and his Rated R gimmick is getting stale year by year.

It's a shame because I am going to miss Edge, thats why I am enjoying him more than ever.

Do you think Edge will jump ship to TNA?
No way, I will lose all my respect for him.
10 + World Title reigns isnt enough?

Who would he feud with in TNA?
Angle? Its not going to be the same as WWE/F.
Hardyz? They feuded many times in WWE/F
Anderson? Hm...Maybe that will be interesting....

But I dont see him going to TNA, why in the world would he?

If I've learned everything from reading dirt sheets it's that you shouldn't read dirt sheets, because more often than not the things they report are either conjecture or things that never wind up happening.

However, this isn't that far-fetched. I don't question Edge's passion for the industry, he's been into wrestling since he was a kid and has been wrestling since the mid 90's. By the time 2012 rolls around that will mean he's been wrestling a little under 20 years. And he hasn't been just rolling around on the mat either, he was the innovator of the TLC match and he's gone through injuries that would have ruined a lesser man's career. If anyone in the WWE deserves to retire before 40, it's Edge.

He's been through a lot with various gimmick matches over his career. And really when you look at it he's had an awesome career (ten world titles plus multiple others), and has made a ton of money.

I have no problem with him retiring while he is still in good health. (hopefully we get a Christina/Edge feud first though!) I would support it. But it would still be cool to see him come back every now and then.

Edge will not be going to TNA, as I said in the thread on this in the TNA section, he will be 39 by then, which means he will be entering the age range of being a "veteran". He has done it all in wrestling. If you look at the mans record he has won literally everything there is to win in the business, he has a huge list of accomplishments.

I have read that he said his body is starting the feel the effects of some of those brutal TLC and ladder matches, and if it is starting the make daily life uncomfortable or he is worried about mobility in later life, then it probably is for the best that he retires at the top, rather than hanging around too long, putting in sub-par performances and letting people remember him as a poor performer.

He wants to go out on his terms, and as he will have earned enough money to never have to work again, I would be considering the same thing if I was in his position.

I hope one day we see Edge take on a different on-camera role, I think he would have alot to offer to the younger talent, but if he is worried about his body and health, or has had enough of the travel schedule then why not call it a day at the top

Will he retire? maybe or maybe not, he loves wrestling, he and christian have loved it since they were kids. it made them best friends. Now he could leave he has like 30 something titles held, thats a shit ton and is definitely top 5 all time for most held, he has a HUGE fan base....hes never really had a bad match or promo and his career has been filled with just memorable stuff from tlc or cage matches to just great promos...it is time for him to retire i dont want him to (hes my favorite after all) but why not go out on top? he'll have a great sendoff and rightfully so, but its just time to go, he might announce or something or join wwe creative but wont go to tna, he'll either stay for maybe 3 or 4 more years or he will in fact retire

Why do you think Edge is leaving?

Most likely due to age, mixed with injuries as well as the fact that he has done more or less everything in the business. It's much like Shawn Michaels really. Edge has accomplished enough to lay his career to rest, and simply settling down with whomever he chooses to settle down with, or whatever he chooses to settle down with. Edge is a 10 times world champion, surefire Hall of Fame inductee. Why would he need to stick around?

Do you think Edge will jump ship to TNA?

Absolutely not. Why would Edge want to go to TNA? He's a huge star in WWE, and I'm sure he's paid quite a lot, which would obviously mean a lot in terms of choosing whether to simply retire or to stick around. I don't see Edge going to TNA, because he has more than enough reasons to stick around in WWE.

Or do you think this isn't true?

Why shouldn't it be true? Edge has discussed it before, and the rumors are simply resurfacing. Edge has spend almost 19 years in the business, won numerous championships, and almost all of the titles that WWE has been able to throw in his direction. Edge could very well be nearing his retirement in 2012, so I don't see why it shouldn't be true? Of course we'd have to wait and see what happens, but for now I wouldn't be surprised if it was true.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him retire within the next two years. He's said a few times that's what he wants to do anyway.

He's been in the business for a long time, wrestled in some grueling matches, won more championships than I can count, and add in that he's had some nagging injuries over the years. It just makes sense for him to retire, what else is there for him to accomplish? He's done it all.

I don't think he would go to TNA, I think when he retires he'll go the HBK route and stay out of the spotlight, save for a few random WWE appearances.

I also think he'll be willing to put other wrestlers over at his expense before he retires. I can say him letting Ziggler or someone retire him or lose a big feud to them. He doesn't appear to have a huge ego.

Edge has been in the WWE for a long long time and has suffered multiple injuries. I mean back in 01/02 he had the neck injury and that almost ended his career I do believe, so the fact that he's been able to come back period is amazing. He's done his time and I hope he can put over a young guy or two before his great career comes to a close. If this is true, then when the time comes, thank you Edge!!!

Edge has been around for a very long time. In an interview with WWE Magazine, HHH said he felt like when you walk back stage the only real vets back there are him and 'Taker, but I think Edge is a veteran in every sense of the word. He's pionneered tag team wrestling, TLC, as well as money in the bank. Edge has had a legendary career and is still able to pull off a good feud without seeming like he's over the hill. However he is rather banged up and his time is running short, I just hope he's able to help out the youth movement as much as he can before he moves on.
