General Discussion Thread

The 1-2-3 Killam

Mid-Card Championship Winner
This is where all the extra-curricular discussion not directly related to a tournament match should go. Feel free to create more threads to campaign for your favorite movie, have a movie poster competition, prediction contest, etc. Please note that this is the only thread that will remain SPAM FRIENDLY throughout the tournament.

Got me excited for this shit. I actually happen to have some knowledge of movies and therefore can participate, unlike the BattleZone tournament.

Couple of questions, Killam:
-Do we nominate movies and they'll be entered upon approval.
-Are the movies that are in the tournament specifically just popular movies or favorites among the forum or is there a theme to the selection.

EDIT: questions have been answered in GSD thread.

Sorry that you missed out on the discussion the first time around, but I genuinely think we'll have enough for everyone to find something they'll appreciate. There's a great list of films compiled. Maybe not "the best of all time", but many of them are. There are some big films missing, and maybe if we do this again some day we can add them.

The second set of matches will be posted later today (Monday), in order to give the first set some time to breath, and myself some time to finish preparing their graphics. Both "cities" will be given the same amount of total time.

That being said...the first 16 matches are up!

Mumbai region and all videsi movies :disappointed:

Nonetheless, good job by all the organizers.

Most of the voting is going Ok right now but Fight Club beating 12 Angry Men is a travesty.
There's no way Tree of Life should be losing either.

You lost all credibility when you voted for Inception. There is only one travesty and that is Pursuit of Happyness. Raiders over Samurai is almost a travesty and I am still waiting for someone to explain what is so good about Wall-E. Far too much vote and run for this tournament to be all that interesting.

That's literally how all of the tournaments here are with the exception of the EOTY Awards. Maybe.

I'll try to see if I find anything where I have something better than "I like this movie better." Don't hold your breath.

To be fair, I haven't seen Wall-E or The Social Network, but still...

Movie tournament would have been a great chance to try the oft trumpeted but never attempted non-spam response is the only way to vote tournament.

But in this tournament, not many arguments can be made other than personal opinion. In the BattleZone and WreatleZone tournament, one can argue to who the better competitor is. In the case of movies, there are no stats (except revenue, which is not that reliable when it comes to quality) to vote upon.

Still pretty bollocks that Grave Of The Fireflies was the only anime movie to get in. Nothing against it, it's one of the greatest war films ever made [and I'm annoyed at it losing in the first round] but come on, Killam, plenty of people +1'd Spirited Away or Mononoke.

I find your list suspect.

I thought about that one for at least 24 hours and I think it was the last matchup I voted on. They're pretty equal but ultimately I'm more likely to watch Inception than Star Wars, I think the hype maybe turns me against Star Wars when push comes to shove.

Amount of hype was a criteria weighted negatively and you went with Inception  If you re-release Inception in 20 years no one will give a fuck.

Wrong. People will still give a fuck because of THAT ending. Even though the 2hours before that is bland characters talking about bland stuff. Inception is like a standard wrestling match. Good premise/opening, eye candy filler in between, and a dusty finish to leave fans wanting more.

This may be tangential, but I was wondering what the criteria for this competition is. In the T2 v. No Country thread, Uncle Sam pointed out No Country's tension and quirkiness. Earlier, I discussed its values as a tragic drama. D-Man argued for T2's special effects and technological advancements, and also how it was a great sequel.

This might be a moot point now that the voting is done (sadly in an overwhelming margin), but by what basis is this competition to be judged? How is one movie determined to be "better" than another? Is it totally subjective or is there some kind of basic guideline?

Waiting until tomorrow to post all of Round 3 at the same time. Will be up pretty immediately after the Bollywood section polls close up.
